Accounts
The computers in the EARTH Lab are on an independent server for GIS and Remote Sensing research and training. You cannot login to them until an account has been set up for you. If you would like to have an account, please contact
Lynn Carlson or phone her at 3-9917. Along with your user name you will be provided with an initial 2 GB of disk space on our GIS / RS server that is automatically mapped to drive letter H:/. If additional disk space is needed, we will do our best to accommodate your requests
Software
Because the focus of the EARTH Lab is GIS and Remote Sensing, there are a limited number of software applications installed on these computers:
- ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 (ArcInfo Level) and Extensions (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Network Analyst, ArcScan, Publisher, Schematics, & Survey Analyst)
- ArcScene and ArcGlobe 9.2
- ArcGIS Workstation 9.2 (command line)
- ArcView 3.3
- ArcGIS Explorer 9.2
- ENVI 4.2
- Google Earth (free version)
- Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel)
- Acrobat Reader
If you require a software application other than these to support your GIS/RS needs, please contact Lynn Carlson or phone her at 3-9917. Your request will be considered if possible.
Printers
Three printers are available in the lab. Printing is currently provided free of charge, but please make every attempt to conserve paper and ink! Do NOT print personal material such as travel itineraries, personal emails, directions to bars downtown, photographs from your last vacation, etc. If it is not class/research related, do NOT print it!
- hp_105 is a black and white laserjet printer (8 1/2 x 11). Use this for printing reports, word documents, class/research related journal articles and the like.
- quake is a color ink jet for printing (8 1/2" x 11" to 11" x 17"). Use this for printing GIS / RS output (maps, graphics, layouts).
- ice is a large format color ink jet plotter (larger than 11" x 17" to 44" x 34"). Use this for printing GIS / RS output (maps, posters).
Geospatial Data
The entire Rhode Island Geographic Information System database is already housed on our server. In addition, many other geospatial data files for the United States and other countries are available. If you cannot find what you need on-line, please contact
Lynn Carlson or phone her at 3-9917 for assistance. Please refer to Finding Geospatial Data for the steps needed to access these data.
