This course focuses on a single historical figure, Alexander the Great, using him as a point of departure for exploring a wide range of problems and approaches that typify the field of Classical Studies. How knowledge of Alexander has been used (and abused) provides a fascinating case study in the formation and continuous reinterpretation of the western Classical tradition.

***ANNOUNCEMENTS***

The FINAL EXAM will take place on Tuesday 12 December at 9 a.m. in our usual classroom (Salomon 203). The exam will last 2 hours and is cumulative (with slightly greater emphasis on what we have done since the midterm exam). It will include a section in which you are asked for brief identifications (of people, places, things, events, etc.); a section of true/false and multiple choice questions; and a section calling for short answers. You will not be asked to write any extended essays. The exam will, of course, cover your assigned readings and information contained in the Powerpoint presentations posted to the class wiki, as well as what I have said in class.
