The 6th season of the Greene Farm archaeology project began on June 1, 2009. This year our excavations continue to focus on the 17th-century Old House area. Our goal for this season is to uncover the extent of two wall features we excavated in 2008 and to assemble a more detailed picture of the Old House area structure(s) based on architectural features, stratigraphy, and diagnostic artifacts. We are digging smaller units (called trenches) compared to those excavated in 2008. These include Trench 7, a 2x3m unit revisiting and expanding upon the 2x2m unit with the foundation wall that we excavated in 2006, Trench 8, a 2x2m unit placed adjacent to the North wall of Trench 4 and intended to capture the direction of the wall feature from 2008, and Trench 9, a 2x3m unit placed adjacent to the East wall of Trench 4 and intended to document the stratigraphy on the other side of the Trench 4 wall.

Photos of our work and finds from each of the four weeks are posted below. Enjoy!

Week 1

Week 1

The field season got off to a fast and exciting start this week. This year we are excavating with a carefully selected crew, which numbers 15 on the most popular days (Tuesdays and Thursdays)! The weather was seasonally warm with a few showers towards the end of the week.
