Civil Engineering from Early Neolithic to Late Antique Period in Asia Minor
13-16. June. 2007. Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Istanbul, Turkey.
Conference website, description (pdf) and the
Program.
Our knowledge about the origins of historical
buildings seems to change only gradually, so
that there is an impression that there is little
still to learn. In particular, the principles of
antique and pre-antique civil engineering
work seem to have been determined for a
long time. On the other hand, an enormous
increase in basic research has produced
new discoveries, which require more complex
models to help us look beyond linear or
positivistic development scenarios.
This particularly applies to Anatolia, in its
position as the link between East and West. A
multiplicity of newly-examined archaeological
sites and the application of innovative
methods are casting a new light on the prehistoric
epochs of Asia Minor building history.
The Anatolian Iron age appears as an era of
fundamental changes in Construction History.
Hellenistic and Roman architecture developments
of this region are about to be reevaluated
beyond the traditions of the 19th
century, with its graecocentristic view. A goal
of the colloquium is to bring together those
research results already recognizable in
single aspects of the region, so as to show a
new aspect of the civil engineering history of
Asia Minor as a whole. In this sense contributions
with predominantly architecturaltechnical
content are particularly welcome,
as are those which examine the sociohistorical
background of craftsmanship.
The colloquium is to be held from 14.-
16.6.2007 in Istanbul. Conference language
will be German and English.
Deadline for submissions of Paper titles and short
abstracts is 31.10.2006, to be sent to:
