Pedagogical Training
2005-2006:
Earned Certificate 1 in Reflective Teaching Methods from the Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning at Brown.
This program demonstrates to teachers ways in which they can critically examine their methods and assumptions about teaching. Based on a series of five lectures and accompanying workshops topics such as variations in learning pathways, constructing a syllabus, persuasive communication and effective assesment methods are addressed. A microteaching session reviewed by one's peers and a video taped session of the participant teaching a class for an hour are also required.
2006-2007:
Participating in the Sheridan Center's Certificate 3 program on Professionalization.
This series of workshops is designed to teach graduate students how best to approach a career in higher education and also how to successfully handle the job seach process.
2006-2007:
Graduate Student Liaison to the Sheridan Center for the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.
The holder of this position is required to attend bi-annual meetings at the Sheridan Center at which various topics relating to graduate student teaching and professionalization are discussed. Participants are expected to return to their departments and implement ideas adapted from those heard at the meeting and in use in other departments, both to enrich the quality of teaching in their own department and to help draw together the various departments at Brown.
As the Graduate Student Liaison I am currently attempting to overhaul the Institute's system of TA assessment. The goal is to design a system which is partially subjective in nature and partially quantified. It is hoped that this will help keep better track of the quality of teaching in courses from year to year, as well as aid the TA's in proving their teaching proficiency when they eventually come on the job market.
In this capacity I also hope to bring a series of measures encouraging discipline specific professionalization to the Institute.
2006-2007:
Workshop Session Leader for Certificate in Reflexive Teaching Methods at the Sheridan Center.
This position is essentially one of facilitator. As a wokshop leader I begin a discussion of the previous week's lecture. I encourage the participants to talk and think about teaching and the topic at hand by asking questions of them and being present to answer any that they may have. This role also requires supervision of group workshopping over the assignment. I was drawn to the position due to a desire to raise the level of teaching in higher education, and becuase I enjoyed my own experience in the certificate 1 program the year before.
