Excavations of a Roman Town

Professor Rolf Winkes is the Director of the Brown University excavation in a particular section of the [Roman town of Tongobriga], a Portuguese National Monument. Participants are graduate and undergraduate students from Brown and professors from Deree College in Athens (Greece) and the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) as well as Portuguese archaeologists, technicians and staff members that do year round field work in other parts of the ancient town under the directorship of Professor Lino Dias. The Brown excavation is supported by the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and also by IGESPAR (Instituto de Gestão do Património Arquitectónico e Arqueológico), a branch of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture.
